At the premiere party for 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” George Clooney explained why he thought Batman as a character needed to go in a new direction. “I don’t respond well in general to people who sit around and say, ‘Woe is me.’ We know that his parents are dead,” he said. “Move on. Grow up.”
THE BATMAN that Clooney and director Joel Schumacher unveiled that night confirmed the worst fears of the country’s masses of Caped Crusader fans. Schumacher put nipples on the batsuit. His camera lingered gratuitously on Batman’s butt. He cast Chris O’Donnell and Alicia Silverstone—actors who are to film what ‘N Sync and Britney Spears are to music—as Robin and Batgirl.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Mary Chapin Carpenter wants a few good men.
July 30,2001
On tour for her eighth album, ``TimeSexLove,'' the 43-year-old singer-songwriter told a Las Vegas audience this weekend that she is thinking of updating the lyrics to one of her older hits, ``I Feel Lucky.'
The upbeat tune, written by Carpenter and Don Schlitz and released in 1992, features the names of country crooners Dwight Yoakam and Lyle Lovett.``After years of singing this song, they just aren't doing it for me anymore,'' Carpenter said.
Criteria for finding new men's names to replace Yoakam and Lovett in the song are: they must be available, have a recognizable name, and Carpenter must think they are ``cute.'' ``I've had audience members volunteer their names, but 'Bob Smith' isn't going to cut it,'' she said, jokingly.
After polling audiences on her current tour, the two names that she has come up with so far are actors John Cusack and George Clooney, who received the biggest round of applause during Friday night's show at the new Cox Pavilion, just off the Las Vegas Strip.
The folk/country/blues artist from Washington, D.C., also is known for her other hits including ``Down at the Twist & Shout'' and ``Passionate Kisses.'

George Clooney: Sure, he's an above-the-line Hollywood leading man now, but gorgeous George wallowed in TV hell for years before striking it big on ER. He appeared in five pilots that never made it to the air and had supporting parts in eight series. He played, in his words, "the resident idiot" on CBS' short-lived sitcom E/R, the factory foreman on Roseanne, the carpenter on Facts of Life, a construction worker on Baby Talk and a cop/rock musician on Sunset Beat.
He finally got the chance to show he had the sex-symbol stuff when he played Sela Ward's love interest on Sisters. His early movie résumé was even less impressive than his TV credits: Return to Horror High, Grizzly II: The Predator and Return of the Killer Tomatoes!, which, to his credit, was considered an improvement over the original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!
